Jailbreak →
Holy crap, does this UI ever look cool. I now have a good reason for jailbreaking my iPod besides backgrounding Pandora. After all, it’s not like I have to worry about iPhone OS 4.0 coming out anytime soon… and no, I’m not angry about that at all! What would make you think I’m angry about that?

Who Can Do Something About Those Blue Boxes? →
Adobe Flash is already on the decline, and Adobe can’t save it. Already, all the modern browsers support HTML5 video in one form or another (I don’t count even IE8 as a modern browser), and it won’t be all that long until sites like YouTube show HTML5 video by default. Once that happens, people won’t install Flash unless they have to, and a few years after that point,...

Thoughts about the iPad
I’m not sure what to think about the iPad. It does have some interesting features that I really want: iWork. If I need to take notes, I can pull the thing out of a backpack, turn it on, and type away. It’s more portable than a laptop, and much nicer to use than a netbook. Most office applications are either crap or, as in the case of Office 2007/2008/2010, consume way too much...

Why Ebooks Won't Kill Print
I consume more ebooks than most people do. The reason is mainly convenience - why drive to the store to get a book when I can pull out my iPod, buy a book, and read it without getting off my butt and spending an hour in town? So why do I say they suck? They’re the wrong answer for the content. This is particularly true of textbooks. Indeed, print textbooks are bad to begin with. When you...

New York Times to Begin Charging for Regular... →
I wouldn’t be surprised if this works, if the price is reasonable, and if it’s not a subscription. On big news days, I can see them getting a lot of sales from people who used up their allotments and need to know what’s really going on. There’s a danger that those people will go to TV or blogs instead, but I hope there’s enough of them that pay the fees that NYT is...

A question for InDesign Users
Is there any way to get smoother scrolling? When I scroll in InDesign, it’s nearly impossible to slowly move the document - it either flies off in that direction, or stays fixed, depending on what I’m doing. Is being able to make minute adjustments with the scroll wheel too much to ask?

Google versus China
This is quite the dramatic turn of events. As a result of recent attacks aimed at Chinese human rights activists, Google has announced that they’re ceasing censorship of Google China, which could force the Chinese government to shut it down. These paragraphs in particular from the Google Blog post got my attention (via chartier): We launched Google.cn in January 2006 in the belief that...

The New Tumblr Ask Button →
Now you can bug bloggers with questions about whatever the hell you feel like, when you feel like it! Because bloggers will be ecstatic about answering random questions! I give it a week before Tumblr makes it optional for the blog authors. If not, Tumblr-bloggers (Tumblr-ers?) will have to get used to answering pointless questions with increasing frequency.

Yet Another Android Phone Doesn't Impress →
According to Engadget, the software keyboard and AMOLED screen both disappoint, and the faster processor doesn’t make up for the shortcomings. With all the phones they’ve released, with all the advantages they’ve pushed, and all the risks they’ve taken, still Google and nearly every major handset maker in America haven’t managed to make a phone as fun, useful or...
