iPad Text Editors - Which is Best?
UPDATE: I no longer recommend WriteRoom, and my criticisms of Elements no longer apply. See my latest update.
The iPad is a wonderful tool for writing, coupled with a Bluetooth keyboard. Yes, it has an onscreen keyboard for a reason, but I know that I’m much more efficient with a physical keyboard, and Apple knows it too, else they wouldn’t have attached a keyboard to their dock for...

Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO →
Interesting that he waited until Apple became the world’s largest company before doing so. That’s quite the cap to his amazing career. His company really did change the world many times over.

Deck.js - Modern HTML Presentations →
An HTML5/CSS3 presentation framework. There has to be a neat way to make use of this… I wonder if this is based on it?

What's Next for WebOS: The Option List
So, now that HP has announced intentions to kick WebOS loose, what might happen to WebOS?
Option A: License it out.
I’m not certain this will work very well - the market is already saturated with zillions of Android and WP7 phones, and both these platforms are much better supported by third-party developers. If HP couldn’t use its might to make something happen, it’s certainly...

Meow: Growl-style Notifications with jQuery →
For most websites, this would be terribly overdoing it. I can see it being an awesome addition to a web app, however.

What's Next for Palm?
A year ago HP bought Palm, basically after RIM took the haggling too far. Fast forward to today, and Palm is no better off than it was a year ago - indeed, it’s arguably worse.
In the meantime RIM has been hanging on with its Blackberry devices through brute force, but without a real solid OS it’s painfully sliding towards obsolescence.
So, here’s my idea: what if RIM were to...

Making Websites With Actions, Not Words
There’s a post on Geek & Mild about Adobe’s new web development tool called Muse. While I’ll be the first to say that building a quality website requires knowing the code behind it, I’m not nearly as quick to say that there is no place for a good WYSIWYG tool for web publishing.
Once upon a time, before the Macintosh came along and before I was born, desktop...

The Flagship of the Mac Fleet
A little while ago the new MacBook Air came out amongst a wave of excitement, and for good reasons. It’s also being touted as the new flagship Mac, and compared to the rest of the Mac line it’s not hard to see why. However, I find it interesting that the heir to the Mac throne is the system that is most vulnerable to the iPad.
If the MacBook Air is on fire right now, the iPad is a...

Elements →
David Chartier:
Second Gear has just released Elements 2.0, a universal text editor for iPhone and iPad. If you’re looking for a polished, Dropbox-powered iOS text editor that supports Markdown, publishing or sharing to Facebook, Tumblr, and Evernote, full text search, a scratchpad for jotting down ideas, exporting files as HTML or PDF, TextExpander, and more, it would be a crime not to...

What If Nintendo Jumped To Apple? →
MG Siegler:
…the software sales would be beyond massive. How many copies of Mario and Zelda would Nintendo sell on the iPhone? What about the iPad? What about Apple TV?
Nintendo is in the unique position where they could certainly have leverage to strike a special deal with Apple here. The end result could be game-changing.
I actually think Apple would be better off buying Nintendo....

The iShine →
Ben Brooks:
When I finished reading this I thought for sure that he was wrong. I headed to my iPhone and searched for just one example of a good looking App icon that left the Apple shine in place — I failed to find one.
Yup, the shine makes a nice icon ugly. However, think how bad those ugly icons would be if they weren’t dulled and obscured by the shine. The shine ruins icons on...

Add Transmission to Western Digital MyBook Live...
So, you need to download some torrents but don’t want to leave your PC on all the time? If you have a Western Digital MyBook Live NAS device, here is a great solution that works even when all your machines are sleeping: add Transmission to your little NAS box.
Enable SSH
First, log into the web UI of your box the normal way by going to this address: http://[NAS-name].local/UI/
This...

No Restraint
I just want to say that I can’t wait for Apple to hit Google with a patent infringement, IP infringement and antitrust lawsuit all at once. Oh, and someone should also sue Google for not releasing Honeycomb’s source code too.

Oh So Innovative
David Drummond, of Google (via Daring Fireball):
Patents were meant to encourage innovation, but lately they are being used as a weapon to stop it.
Eric Schmidt, of Google:
…competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations…
I won’t disagree that patents are stifling innovation. Google sure is going to great lengths, though, to say...

More Than a NAS →
I bought the Western Digital MyBook Live 2TB NAS a few months ago, and it’s been a great network storage device that I’ve also used for streaming videos to my Xbox. I found out a little while ago, though, that it has hidden SSH access, and inside is a Debian installation, with 256MB of RAM and an 800MHz processor.
Hello low-power home server!
Now, of course, the next step is to...

Happy Wi-Fi Day!
Wi Wi-Fi Day? Because it’s 8.02.11.
Awesome! Hope to see you next Wi-Fi day! In 2111 - when I’m 121 years old. I wonder if this blog (and, by extension, Tumblr) will still be around in a hundred years…
