Some Quick Thoughts on WWDC
Apple integrates Twitter across the OS. Instant hilarity… several months ago Ping launched with a whimper partly because Facebook yanked sharing ability after the last minute. Now Apple says “you can go to hell, we’re going all-in on Twitter!”
I get the sense that with iOS5 that the OS has reached a level of maturity. Any additional features they’ll add will be hardware related or a firming up of existing but weak feature that’s already implemented. Like notifications… that linen sheet is ugly and I don’t care who disagrees with me.
I’m not too happy about suddenly being treated as a second-class citizen with my Verizon iPhone. I had enough of that crap on my Droid Incredible. Hopefully it’s only a temporary situation (so far, only the first iCloud features are denied to me), but if I have to wait until winter for the iOS5 update to be applied to the Verizon version I will not be happy.
The developer stuff that I’ve heard hints about in Lion - sandboxing, for instance - sounds more exciting to me than anything else I’ve seen in the consumer-facing list of features. Mission Control and Launchpad leave me rather underwhelmed - though I need to try it to be sure I’m not crazy. All that said, Mail is definitely an improvement.
Also, as a Hackintosh user, I’m not looking forward to an App Store upgrade to Lion. One day I will buy a car that’s more stable than an earthquake, and after that I will buy a real Mac, and then I’m sure I will love it.
